Tips for Stress Management in Recovery

Stress is a normal part of life, but for people in recovery from addiction, it can also be a trigger for relapse. Managing stress effectively is an essential skill for maintaining long-term sobriety and emotional balance. At Smarmore Castle rehab clinic, we encourage every patient with alcohol addiction or drug addiction to create a personal stress management plan as part of their overall relapse prevention strategy.

Learning to manage stress doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a skill that improves with awareness, consistency and practice. The first step is understanding how stress shows up in your body and mind.

Recognising the Warning Signs of Stress

Stress affects everyone differently, but there are common physical and psychological signals that can alert you when you’re becoming overwhelmed.

Physical signs of stress may include:

  • Muscle tension or headaches
  • Upset stomach or digestive changes
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Rapid heartbeat or shallow breathing
  • Fatigue or low energy

Psychological signs of stress often look like:

  • Feeling irritable or restless
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Racing thoughts or anxiety
  • Low mood or hopelessness
  • Increased cravings for substances

By recognising these signs early, you can take action before stress escalates into a threat to your recovery.

Identify Your Personal Stress Triggers

Understanding what causes stress is a key part of managing it. In recovery, stressors can be internal (such as guilt, fear, or low self-esteem) or external (like financial worries, family tension, or work demands).

Take time to reflect on:

  • Which situations leave you feeling depleted or on edge?
  • Are there specific environments or people that increase your anxiety?
  • What thoughts or emotions tend to accompany your stress response?

By listing these out, you begin to build a map of your stress landscape—and from there, you can design a plan to navigate it.

Creating a Personal Stress Management Plan

A stress management plan helps you feel more in control when life becomes difficult. It allows you to respond rather than react, and to use recovery-affirming strategies instead of returning to old patterns.

Here are some key questions to include in your plan:

  • What are my personal signs of stress?
  • What are the situations I find most stressful?
  • What healthy activities help me relax and feel grounded?
  • What should I do if I feel triggered or overwhelmed?
  • Who can I contact when I need support?

Each identified stressor can then have a matching coping strategy—for example, using breathing techniques after a difficult conversation, or reaching out to a peer when work pressure feels too much.

Healthy Ways to Cope Without Substances

Recovery teaches us that we cannot control everything, but we can change how we respond. Finding effective ways to relax is vital to prevent stress from spiralling.

Try incorporating some of these techniques into your daily routine:

  • Physical movement: Gentle exercise, yoga, or walking outdoors can release tension and lift your mood.
  • Mindfulness and breathing: Slowing your breath and becoming aware of the present moment can lower your stress levels in minutes.
  • Creative expression: Journalling, drawing or playing music can help process emotions and distract from distress.
  • Connection: Talking to someone who understands—whether a sponsor, therapist or friend—can help shift perspective and reduce isolation.

Even five minutes of intentional self-care each day can have a protective effect on your recovery.
